It’s no news that WordPress is great and getting better with each version, but starting out with it can be a bit intimidating. The usual first steps include trying out the themes given as default then finding free themes. From there to buying themes and distance is short. Beyond that many would begin to develop their own themes.
In this post we will focus on the 2nd step: finding free themes.
Finding free themes is not a big deal, finding good looking solid free themes is a bit more difficult and time consuming. The mere fact it’s “free” does not mean it’s stylish nor that it works well. So to help in the search we offer a few solid and stylish themes that cover a wide range of needs. Obviously developing your own theme is the best way to go, but until you get there, here are several other choices:
This a solid portfolio theme that I simply love and have used for a while. It’s no nonsense approach is great if just want to show the work and let it speak for it self.
If your looking for something more sophisticated where the theme is as strong as the content, this is the way to go, just like strong coffee, you will not be able to avoid it.
Retro never went away, in fact it’s here more then ever. So, if you’re looking for that vintage theme, this one is a solid chois and it’s backed up be “the house” of Smashing Magazine, which is always a good sign that it’s on the up and up.
