Going shopping?
Well, in the age of the internet you might not have to leave the comfort of your home.
Supermarket websites are undergoing major changes in this period in time.
Traditional supermarkets were a bit late to the internet party.
Remember Web Van? one of the originals in internet supermarket arena. Web Van died with the original internet bubble and that left enough room for “traditional” bricks and mortar supermarkets to enter the fray. However, while throughout the first part of this decade many traditional player did set up an internet presence, they did very little by way of providing true e-commerce.
It is no wonder that many supermarkets in the United States are still ok with having their websites take the role of a bulletin board. It cost a lot less for a supermarket chain to update the weekly circular then to set up the infrastructure required to provide grocery shopping at home.
Another consideration here is that many supermarkets do deliver after you shop. In other words the customer does make it down to the market, but does not have to carry his/her’s groceries home, they are delivered. This solution seem to keep everyone happy- the customer gets to squeeze the tomatoes and the market gets to provide an extra convenience.
Regardless of what side of this argument you take, it seem that change, however slow, is coming. As you will see in the following post many in the supermarket industry are working hard on looking good, even though there is no shopping cart on the site.
Before we get going with the roundup, one more comment. We were surprised to find out that Publix, the supermarket chain based in the South Eastern US, has a web presence that leaves a lot to be desired. We say this because Publix has been recognized time and time again for it’s outstanding design for their privet-label products. We hope to see Publix display its design muscle in the internet arena too.
Enjoy the roundup and if you have another supermarket website you want to share with us, especially if it is not in the US, please leave us a comment.
And because we mentioned Web Van earlier, here is what happened to them… they are now a part of the Amazon network.
