Mega Drop-Down menus are not new, they have been around for a bit, however most designers rarely get to use them. The reason Mega Drop-Down menus are not often used is that on most projects they are not needed, there is simply not enough volume, in terms of items on a menu.
Most web design projects might require drop down menus but only a handful of them have such a large selection of categories that they require a Mega Drop-Down menu. So Mega Drop-Down menus, are all about leveraging technology in order to display lots of items in a smaller, and condensed space. It is only with a client that has lots of categories and sub categories on their site that such technology is helpful, otherwise we might as use a regular drop-down menu.
